Before the view, before the viewing: a more personal way to think about your next home in Spain or Cyprus.
It often begins with a photograph. A terrace in the afternoon light, a glimpse of blue beyond an open door, the possibility of a different everyday. But finding a home is also about imagining the life that happens when the photograph ends.
Begin with your everyday.
Before you make a shortlist, picture an ordinary Tuesday. Where will you have your first coffee? Will you walk to the shops, work from home, or spend the morning outside? Who will share the space with you, and how often? These modest questions can tell you more about the home you need than a long list of impressive features.
A place for occasional weekends has a different rhythm from somewhere you plan to spend several months. A generous guest suite might matter more than another reception room. A comfortable corner for reading might be more valuable to you than a larger terrace. Write down the details of your own day before borrowing someone else’s idea of the perfect home.
Look beyond the view.
A beautiful outlook is a wonderful beginning. Give the streets around it the same attention. During a visit, leave time to walk without an appointment: find a café, follow the route to the water, and notice where you naturally want to stop. Try the journeys you expect to make regularly, instead of relying only on distances on a map.
If possible, return at a different time of day. A street can feel quite different in the morning and the evening. Listen with the windows open, look at the neighbouring terraces and ask yourself whether the atmosphere suits your pace. You are choosing a small part of the world to come back to, as well as a set of rooms.

Notice how the home lives.
Once inside, slow the viewing down. Follow the route from the kitchen to the terrace. Imagine bringing in shopping, finding a quiet place for a call, or welcoming friends for a long lunch. Look for somewhere to put the things that rarely appear in property photographs: suitcases, beach towels, books and everyday shoes.
Pay attention to light and shade, not just room size. Where would you sit with a book? Is there an outdoor corner you would enjoy at the time of day you are most likely to use it? A thoughtful layout often reveals itself in these small transitions between one part of the day and the next.
Make a personal brief.
Give your search a little structure. Separate what is essential from what would simply be lovely, and leave space for a home to surprise you. A short, honest brief makes conversations clearer and gives you something useful to return to after a day of viewings.

- How you plan to use the home, and who will spend time there.
- The everyday places you want within easy reach.
- Three features you would find difficult to compromise on.
- Your preferred balance of privacy, company and outdoor space.
- The questions you want to revisit after each viewing.
Leave room for a second look.
After a viewing, write down how the home felt as well as what it offered. Which room can you still picture? What would you change? Which questions remain unanswered? Comparing those notes with your original brief helps keep the search personal, especially when several very different homes appeal to you.
Give yourself permission to look again. Sometimes the strongest connection is quiet: a comfortable proportion, a street you enjoy walking down, a terrace that feels like somewhere you already know. The aim is to find a place that continues to make sense when you imagine living there.
